How To Unlock Your Child's Genius For Schooling Families

By David Simon

In 1994 I wrote the book, How to Unlock Your Child's Genius, which was to become a key book for many families and homeschooling families. The book was simply based on my long years of being an independent educationalist, and it identified an eleven step system for unlocking the genius of children and young people. In addition to this, I would sell thousands of books at conferences, churches, schools, shops and community centres.

The book had a bigger impact than I had anticipated. I was asked to talk all over England and more book sales resulted. This journey all started in 1987 when I rented a run down youth club in south London to start the first of my many Saturday schools. The youth club was dilapidated and stank heavily of beer and marijuana as it had been used by local youths to run their Friday night rave sessions. However, this experience, which lasted over twenty-six years made me an expert in this field of education and meant that I could now help thousands of families.

After a few years I had assembled a group of teachers who understood my method of education based on the eleven steps and I how had a network of Saturday schools. The system of education that I had developed included ares such as diet and learning, how children learn to read and understand mathematics, cultural literacy, educational management in the home, financial literacy, leadership and mind games and family learning. I was now being contacted by many homeschooling families who wanted a holistic approach to their own homeschool.

I found myself advising families on how to homeschool their children or to set up part-time schooling projects within their homes. Most families had little idea on how to homeschool but desperately wanted the best for their children. Many had simply withdrawn their child from school due to bullying, racism, poor academic standards etc. So my small book had become the bible for many homeschooling families and other families wanting an alternative approach to the education of their children.

What, you might ask, were these newly trained parent-teachers able to achieve? They had now become more confident, more resourceful and had acquired much greater knowledge on education. As a result they could organise their homes as places of real learning; they could programme their homes as places to nurture leadership and success. All of this resulted in the families realising that learning is a journey for the whole family and that real education comes from within.
