Advantages Of Artificial Insemination And The Techniques Involved

By Keith Fairley

Artificial insemination, AI, is a term used in reference to the process in which there is launching of sperms into the female reproductive system through various means other than sexually. This is able to be accomplished in many ways. Every procedure is likely to be costly and at times the odds of success are not very impressive. On a general basis, the success rate of pregnancy from AI is at around 25 percent.

Of the very many techniques in availability, the two that are more commonly used are intracervical and intrauterine techniques. The latter is not as commonly used as the former. Intracervical techniques are recommended for people that are single, gay and lesbian couples and to some extent married couples. The married couples that use it are those that do not have any serious issues with their reproductive system, only that the men in question may not be able to ejaculate during sexual intercourse. It is a painless and quick method in which sperms are directly placed in the cervix from where they swim into the fallopian tube.

The second option, the intrauterine one, is a bit uncomfortable. It at times leads to cramping. It involves implanting sperms directly into the womb, bypassing the cervix. With this method, the chances of fertilization are increased. It is used together with fertility drugs for more efficiency. The timing of ovulation is very important. It is the best option for people with reproductive problems like cervical mucus or low sperm count.

Artificial insemination can be done using sperms from a partner or from donors. Sperm banks are the best option for most women that decide to go for the donor option. Such details about the donor as height, weight, eye color are given to the woman before a decision is reached on which one they want to use.

Upon choosing the most suitable sperms, they are supposed to be purchased. This is followed by a process of washing that is done to select only the healthiest sperms and the most mobile. The rest are discarded. They are then shipped to the clinics where the procedure will be performed. Sperms taken from sperm banks are tested for virility and diseases and washed. One is also sure that those that donated them signed away any parental rights over the resulting children.

On average, the procedure costs something in the range of hundreds of thousands of dollars for every cycle. The price is not constant and could increase depending on several factors. For instance, if fertility medications and ultrasound are needed, one is likely to pay more. Prices will also depend on the clinic and their geographical location. There are insurance covers that cater for the entire cost.

In certain instances, the procedure is done in an hour or less. If on the other hand fertility drugs will be used, the woman in question will need to use them for one week preceding ovulation. Before pregnancy is achieved, it may take between 3 to six cycles.

There are important tips that help in improving chances of success. For men, there should not be sexual intercourse before the procedure so that the best sperms are harvested. The waiting period for men with normal sperm count is only 24 hours. Those with low count would have to wait for over 72 hours. Women are advised to eat foods rich in proteins before the procedure.
