Various Methods People Use When Building A Geodesic Dome Greenhouse

By Patrick James

It is a basic fact that many people love to grow their own vegetable garden. There are few things like planting some seeds in the dirt and months later reaping the many rewards of your difficult labor. In many colder climates people are beginning to rediscover the many benefits of building greenhouses to basically prolong their growing season. Understanding the various construction techniques used for building geodesic dome greenhouse kits can be advantageous if you try raising a vegetable garden this way.

After deciding on building one generally the following question is regarding how are they built or what materials can I use. There is not a simple answer to these questions. There are several different methods people use that will range from quite inexpensive materials which go up in about a day, to much more expensive materials which take longer to build. There are also prefabricated models which you can find on the internet that have everything cut and marked to build.

Some people like the inexpensive flattened conduit method. It is probably the easiest. You flatten out the ends of metal tubing you buy at the store. Then you drill a hole at both ends for a bolt to go through and bend it just a little. After construction it is generally covered with light weight plastic. Domes like this can generally go up in under a day.

Some like the tube and hub method. With this one instead of bolting all the flattened pipes together, a larger pipe is used with holes drilled in it. The studs are then bolted to it instead of each other. It is then covered with light weight plastic. This generally is a little stronger while still being inexpensive.

Some people use the hub and beam method. This method is somewhat complex and costly because it involves using specially pre-cut hubs and beams that someone connects to form the framework for the dome. Most permanent domes are constructed in this manner.

A more expensive way to go is the pre-made paneled timber and frame method. This is typically the method most prefab stores use that people find surfing the net. This method uses mostly pre-cut wooden timbers which are made to smoothly connect along all the edges. They also have an outside material used on them to reinforce them and make them stronger.

One of the most durable and longest lasting kind is the monolithic dome. They will typically outlive most houses they are built beside. They are typically built with several different layers of cement heavily sprayed over balloon forms. They are also sprayed with a polyurethane foam inside them to act as waterproofing and as thermal insulation. After everything dries out they are fitted for the windows and doors.

You do not always have to use only one technique when building your geodesic dome greenhouse. When you understand how each method is used this opens the possibilities of combining parts from each type to make something that will work for you. Remember they are not only for greenhouses, they also make good sun rooms to relax inside.
