Weighing The Differences Between Professional And DIY Reconditioned Hot Tubs

By Marissa Velazquez

One of the greatest things about indoor plumbing is that people can now take baths and showers with relative ease. It was not all that long ago that water had to be heated on a wood or coal stove and put into a soaking tub. Most of these earlier tubs were made from cast iron, because it held the heat longer so more people could bathe. Luckily modern showers and bathtubs are made from different composite materials anyone can avoid expensive remodels and get reconditioned hot tubs.

There are several positive advantages for going this way vs having your bathroom remodeled. The best advantage is that you could choose a color combination or single color that you are fond of and not settle for the boring gray, peach or white ones. Using new materials being developed in the past few years these finishes are as durable and long lasting as the originals.

Older tubs develop thousands of microscopic pours over time through prolonged use and wear on the finish. These pours become a breading ground for all kinds of mildew, mold growth and fungus. In some cases the new finish can be better than the old one because it seals up the open pores creating a smooth surface that mold and fungus has difficulties growing on. This makes them easier to clean costing less money over time.

Generally speaking refinishing is not really a DIY type of project. It is generally done by professionals who have been trained to do it, and specialize in what they are doing. This does not mean that the average home owner can not do it, rather professionals can typically do it better and with a some type of warranty.

The steps for a using a DIY kit and a professional's method are often close to the same steps. Professionals typically have better materials, application media, and the technique that has evolved over time from years of job experience. If you have confidence that you could also do this task, this is a simple reference for various things you need to realize.

The tub should be completely free of any debris or scum. Carefully sand off the edges of cracks and holes and fill them with auto body filler. Let it dry before sanding it smooth. Clean it with acetone and let it dry. Protect all surfaces which are not being refinished. Apply a bonding agent primer before putting on acrylic paint.

Make sure there is ample drying time between each coat of primer and paint. Also lightly sand between each coat to make sure the finish is as smooth as possible. The finished result is only going to be as good as the product you started with. Keep it clean and keep it smooth. When the last coat of paint has dried, use some buffing compound to polish it to a shine and seal it.

Usually reconditioned hot tubs will save someone money that may be spent on more vital things for their home. Doing it themselves could save them even more. The key factor is to deciding what their realistic expectations will be and letting their wallet lead the way.
